Sledding???

We didn’t have a sled the first day of the snowstorm… so the boys pulled my laundry basket out for Chance.

The things boys will do when the women aren’t around.  *sigh*

Snowstorm

Portland has been hit with a “snowstorm”.

So… seriously… I’ve seen snowstorms.  And this is really NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL.  But because Portlanders aren’t used to driving in the snow, this has become the “snowstorm of ’08″.

I’ve been out every day to run errands.  Though I’ve never had a problem driving in the snow, I’m thankful for our Durango and our all-weather tires.  I guess the worst of it is still to come this weekend.  I hope it’s not SO bad that my mom can’t come down for Christmas or so that we can’t go on our vacation to Eagle Crest.

We’ll see.

We’ve still taken full advantage of the snow and the sloping driveway to our new house.  Actually… the whole neighborhood has taken advantage of our driveway… but here are some pictures of Chance and Brian sledding this morning.  We borrowed the sled from our neighbors.  Before they so kindly loaned us a real sled/toboggan, we were using my laundry basket.

If you click on the pictures, you’ll get an enlarged view:

Then, he came in to hang out by the warm fire:

You can see Chance through the fire on that last picture.  We have a shared fireplace between our family room and kitchen.  Now… for extra cuteness – here’s our 6 week old Paxton:

Moved IN!

Can I just tell you right now how happy I am that I’m out from under out old landlord’s thumb?

We’re moved into our new house now.  I can now say:  WE’RE HOME!!!

We started moving on Friday, but saved all the big things for when we had help on Saturday.  So many people came to help – from childhood friends to old church friends to new church friends.  We were totally out of the old house and in this new one by Saturday evening.

I’m grateful for all our help… but mostly, I’m thankful for my Mom and my in-laws who spent all weekend (a snowstorm weekend) getting us settled in and helping with the kids.  I am a lucky girl :)

The best part of moving in was seeing Chance’s face when we showed him his room complete with his new firetruck bed.

He’s a happy boy.  AND… he hasn’t had a problem sleeping without his binkie at all.  SUCCESS!

I’m totally behind on blogging, but I guess it’s good we didn’t get our internet, cable and phone set up till Tuesday (yesterday) so I couldn’t squander away my time on the internet.  :)  Instead, I got a LOT of unpacking done.

However… I’m back from my little hiatus now.  I still have some unpacking and organizing to do, but I’ve missed writing… so tune in :)

The Binkie Toss

Yesterday, Chance really wanted a snack.

The only issue was that I was ALMOST done making lunch so a snack wasn’t really an option.  I told him it would ruin his appetite for lunch if I gave him a snack, but he told me: “Mommy, I really want a snack!  I’m a big boy and I know I want a snack!”

He kept pressing me for a snack, so I decided to make it HIS decision.  I told him he could have a snack if he threw his ONE AND ONLY REMAINING binkie in the garbage can.  I explained that if he REALLY REALLY needed a snack and was a big enough boy to make that decision, this is how it would go.  Of course I thought this would just deter him from the snack.

After about 2 minutes, Chance said: “Mommy… I’m a big boy and I’m going to throw my binkie away in the garbage!”

*BLINK*

I explained again what that would mean and asked if he understood.  He said he did.  I even asked him what would happen when he went to bed later that night and he said, “No more binkie!” and proceeded to walk over the trash can, open it up and drop his binkie in.

The kid got his snack… AND he ate all his lunch.

So far, we’ve gotten a few tears about his binkie at bedtime and his naptime today, but he still went to sleep without it and didn’t fuss TOO much.  All he says is: “Mommy, I want my binkie!” and I reply, “I know, honey… I want you to have your binkie too, but YOU decided you were a big boy and threw it away in the garbage… REMEMBER?”  And then he’s fine.

Well… not “FINE”.  I mean, he’s still in the mourning process… but overall, it’s been going pretty well considering this kid was ADDICTED to his pacifier.

I really can’t believe he chose to do this the week of our move (and he’s getting over a cold right now too), but Brian and I are sticking to it now (even though I have an extra stash, JUST IN CASE… but I’m really hoping I don’t have to use it).

What was YOUR childhood “lovey” and when did YOU give it up?

Santa & Shoelaces

I’ll admit it.  We don’t do the “Santa” thing.

Brian and I decided a long time ago that we wouldn’t play up the Santa thing.  We like Santa… and we want Chance and Paxton to know Santa is a nice man who may or may NOT bring you a gift… but we wouldn’t make him out to be the star of the Christmas season.

However… we wanted the to start the tradition of our boys taking an annual photo with Santa.  There is no better Santa than the one at the Downtown Macy’s.  He’s got a real beard and everything.

I started playing up seeing Santa with Chance a couple of days ago.  I think all Chance understands of Santa is that he’s “The Nice Christmas Man” (that’s what he called him the last two days) and that he wears the same outfit Chance wore last year (Chance had a cute Santa outfit).

Here are the pictures from our outing tonight:

Santa asked Chance what he wanted for Christmas.  Chance said, “I like trucks.”  Santa replied, “So, you want a truck for Christmas?”  Chance answers, “I already have one at home!”  HA!

We also checked out Frosty the Snowman and the train.

Afterwards, we took a stroll to Starbucks where all the “crazies” apparently hangout after dark.  It’s amazing how unaware some people are of their surroundings.  HELLOOOOO… there’s a 3-year-old next to you… maybe you should remove the “F-bomb” from your vocabulary for a couple of minutes.

We still like Starbucks (… and downtown Portland) anyway.

It was a fun night.  Cold… but fun!

And just for kicks… here’s a picture of Chance earlier in the day.  He found one of Brian’s shoelaces and decided he needed to lace up his shoes with it.  Here’s how I found him when I came downstairs:

I didn’t have the heart to tell him his CROCS don’t need laces.
