Worship Confessional: 12.04.11

Yesterday was truly a fun day of worship.

We have a guest speaker, Kim Hammond, in town right now. He told his story and led us to a place where we could truly see hope. To hear it, you canĀ CLICK HERE.

This week’s music was mellowed out a bit. We just had Patrick & me on acoustic guitars and Mikell on the cajon.

Our Sunday Setlist was:
1. O Worship The King
2. O Come All Ye Faithful
3. The First Noel
4. Be Thou My Vision
5. You Won’t Relent

It was fun to just keep things simple for a week. But the best part was hearing voices raised singing back at us. That’s always, always, ALWAYS my favorite.

I’m not a huge Christmas carols fan… probably because it’s been playing on the radio since October… but I won’t lie. Singing them with Paseo was super fun.

How was YOUR Sunday?

Worship Confessional – 11.27.11

I’ve been so bad at blogging recently. And I’m okay with that because I’ve been getting a lot of time for face-to-face interaction. But with that said… I’m gonna be better (for now).

Today was a rough day at Paseo. Not the service itself as much as just me. I woke up with a pretty raw throat. Every note seemed tough to sing this morning, but I asked all our attenders to help me out in leading this morning… and what’s cool is they DID!!!

I love my church family.

Our Sunday Setlist this morning was:
O Come All Ye Faithful – C. Frederick Oakeley and John Francis Wade
Restless – Audrey Assad
You Alone – David Crowder
How Deep The Father’s Love For Us – Stuart Townend
How Great Is Our God – Chris Tomlin
How He Loves – John Mark McMillan

Today was a simple day when it came to the band. It was just me on the keyboard, Abby singing with me & Guillermo on the congas. It was laid back… which was good… because our monitors kept cutting out. There were full verses where we were driving blind. I was hoping I was hitting the right keys and hoping I was singing in the matching keys of what I couldn’t hear myself playing.

It was rough.

But the main speakers were working. And when I thought it was horrible, I could look out and see arms raised and hear voices lifted on my behalf.

This morning, the people of Paseo Christian Church led worship. I merely chose the set. And it was FANTASTIC.

Nothing beats a family that will lift you up in worship when you can’t seem to quite make it.

How was YOUR Sunday?

Worship Confessional: 05.01.11

Let’s step back from politics and deaths of evil people and return to our weekly programming…

Sunday morning was everything fun!

Our Sunday Setlist was:

1. Death In His Grave – John Mark McMillan
2. How He Loves – John Mark McMillan
3. Awesome God (Chorus Only) – Rich Mullins
4. Revelation Song – Jennie Riddle
5. From The Inside Out – Joel Houston

Our Team:
Me – Worship Leader/Acoustic Guitar
Patrick Leong – Acoustic Guitar/Vocals
Vanessa Williams – Keys/Vocals
Sammy Gutierrez – Electric Guitar
Michelle Gutierrez – Bass Guitar
Curtis Williams – Drum
David Robertson – Sound
Ethan Hunt – Graphics/Visuals

Other than the set being really worshipful, dynamic and just plain fun… I feel like both gatherings went extremely well. How do I gage that? Of course by the lack of hiccups and overall smoothness of all transitions as well as the technicality and musicianship of the worship band… but mostly, I feel like the message was not only grasped, but people were challenged by it.

Greg talked about pausing in life… Sabbath. This is something that is SO applicable to all of us, especially in this “go-go-go” culture. I know I can always be better at observing Sabbath. I know I’m way better at creating boundaries and making sure I have family time now vs. before… but I still have a tendency to push to do more when I can. That can get unhealthy real quick.

Today was a good reminder to stop and take the moment. To hear Greg’s message, CLICK HERE to hear it on iTunes.

Also, I thought I’d include the recorded house-mix of how we did “How He Loves” into “Awesome God” in case you were interested. You can ignore all the times I flub the words… or chords :) CLICK HERE for that.

Now your turn. How was YOUR Sunday?

Worship Confessional – 02.27.11

Let’s start with the “lists”.

The Team:
Guitars: Sammy Gutierrez & me
Cajon: Vashti Gutierrez

The Sunday Setlist:
1. Better Than Life – Marty Sampson
2. All We Need – Charlie Hall
3. Come Thou Fount – Robert Robinson
4. Revelation Song – Jennie Riddle

This week was about the mission of the Church. How we communicate… and what we communicate. Our goal is to proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom by word and deed so people may enter into it. However, we as Christians SUCK at this.

We either take the truth of it all and create lists of “to-do’s” and then judge everyone by how well we follow that list OR we become emotional story whores, just waiting for the next “spiritual high”.

Nate did a great job communicating where our hearts need to be when we talk about the Greatest Gift. He also freed us up and commissioned us to speak freely instead of just leaving it to the “celebrity pastors”. I think a lot of us needed to hear that.

After our two gatherings, we baptized 3 of our attenders. Greg wrote about it HERE, so I won’t re-write… but I will say this: I LOVE MY HOME CHURCH! What I love most are the stories behind each attender. Nothing fake. Nothing condescending. Just the goal of real community because Paseo really, truly CARES about their community.

So there you go… CHEERS to community. Let’s build something together!

How was YOUR Sunday?

Worship Confessional: 2.20.11

My last Worship Confessional I wrote was last May. Let’s see if I remember how to do this thing…

Last Sunday was a blast. Actually… the first Sunday I led was two Sundays ago. It was an acoustic set with three guitars (Justin Kirklin, Sammy Gutierrez & myself). But it’s been a week… and I was on a writing strike, so I’m not gonna go back to describe that set except that it was RAD! It’s always fun bringing it down to just the acoustics.

Ok… last Sunday:

The Team:
Guitars: Patrick Leong & me
Bass: Michelle Gutierrez
Keys: Vanessa Williams
Drums: Curtis Williams

Our Set:
1. Beautiful One (Jeremy Camp Version) – Tim Hughes
2. Famous One – Chris Tomlin
3. My Glorious -Martin Smith
Sermon: Forgotten Ways – Sacrifice
4. Speak To Me – Dave Lubben
5. All For Love – Mia Fields

During “Speak To Me”, Greg set it up so that we could personally pray for the people of Paseo. Instead of an alter call, he asked those who wanted prayer to stand. The staff and elder team then went to them and prayed over them. They met them where THEY were. Then… one of my highs was seeing those who were just prayed for lean over and pray for someone else. THAT’S CHURCH RIGHT THERE!

We pulled out pretty old songs for this last weeks set. But what was fun was seeing people sing, eyes closed and hands lifted up. Some even danced. They sang because they knew the words. Their hearts remembered another time in their spiritual walk. Their souls could sing the praises of their Maker.

For me, there’s nothing better than hearing voices singing upward together all because I’ve helped coordinate a downbeat and a common key to start in. There’s nothing more humbling than helping usher His people to worship at the foot of His Throne.

It’s good to be back.

How about you? How was your Sunday experience?
