“Do You Love Me?”

The last month (plus) has been pretty challenging for all of us.

Chance has definitely felt the tension, the sorrow (in Scott’s death), the busyness (of moving) and has at times acted out because of the inconsistency.  You may say he’s just being a normal 3 year-old… which is probably quite true.  Brian and I have found ourselves reacting to Chance in ways we don’t usually.  We usually prefer to be more PRO-active with our kiddos… but life is life right now.

Today, however, has been a good day.

Something clicked today.  Maybe it’s because we’re about to get away on a family vacation.  Maybe it’s because we’re finally all moved in.  Maybe it’s because we’ve finally been able to breathe again.  Maybe all of the above.

I trimmed Chance’s hair (cuz he took scissors to himself a week or so ago) and it needed to be fixed.  That was some nice one-on-one time.  But then… he did this to himself (btw… you can see in the front where he cut his own hair. I couldn’t TOTALLY hide that):

trouble staying in the lines

Mmmhmmm…

I had him hop in the shower immediately and while I was drying him off, the best conversation I’ve ever had with him occurred:

Chance: Mommy… you love me, huh?
Me: Yes, Chance… very much!
C: Do you love me even when I’m naughty?
M: Yes!
C: Do you love me when I color all over myself?
M: Yes!
C: Do you love me when I disobey?
M: Yes!
C: And Jesus loves me even when I disobey you?
M: Yes!
C: Will you ever not love me if I’m bad?

This is where I stop and pull him on my lap.

M: Chance, look at me in the eyes.  I will ALWAYS love you, even if I don’t like what you are doing. I will ALWAYS love you… more than anything.

*QUIET MOMENT*

Chance: Yeah… that’s what I thought.

Chance 1

this post is pure beauty. this is why we do all of it… all the mom stuff that makes us crazy. so we can be there when the 3 year old mind has a moment of connection with something like this.

    excellent work, friend.

Love the photos! Especially the one where he colored his face. My kids have done the same thing with sharpies or the other ones have colored on them.

That may just melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes. So glad you got the chance to explain that to him. Amazing.
