First Day of Kindergarten

Chance is in half day Kindergarten.

Granted… it’s not full day school yet, but it’s still school… E.V.E.R.Y.D.A.Y.

He is no longer by my side Monday’s through Friday’s from 8:50am to 11:50am. This just makes me anticipate what it will be like with him gone ALL day next year. That means he’ll be in school more of his days than with me.

My baby is growing up.

Chance has homework every day. He has take home reading (flash cards and all) he’s to do with us as well as a coloring/cutting/art page. It’s definitely a new kind of life for Brian and me. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t remember having homework in Kindergarten. Whichever way… I think it’s great. It’s more intentional time for me and my boy.

I don’t know when we’re gonna find time to do his homework. I’d much rather goof off and be silly with him.

When do you have your kids do their homework?
No kids? When did YOU do your homework?

He is completely precious Jenni! And FYI … I cried harder when Emma went to first grade / all day than Kinder. Something about someone else being with them more hours a day than you. Yikes.

We walk in the door grab and snack and sit down and knock homework out. None of us want to do it … and I think I’m the worse there. If we start playing and having fun, then we never want to get started. Good luck! :)

i’m totally with you on this. i HATE the thought of that. i would totally homeschool… but i’m pretty sure i neither have the patience or the smarts for that one.

thanks for the advice. since it’s half day, we’ll come home for some lunch, then knock out the coloring and reading before the rest of the day.

I LOVE the picture of him by the fridge. He looks so nervous and cute!

      he was SO nervous.

he’s still confused to why he goes to school every day since he’s used to only going every other day.

I have 3 daughters who, up until this year, were in public school. The homework got more outrageous every year. Last year, my 2nd grader would come home with 1-2 hours of homework at least 3 nights per week (more than my 4th grader!). We were all exhausted by bedtime, and dreaded having to get up and do it again the next day. And, I missed them like crazy! Most moms can’t wait to send their kids to school every fall, but I always dreaded it because I like to be with my girls. So…this year we decided (one week before school started!!!) to homeschool. No more homework! We’re done with school in 2-3 hours, and we enjoy the rest of our day. It’s an option that I thought I would never consider, but God is blessing us greatly through it. Now, I know that my girls are learning about God in every school subject! And, “afternoon homework” is a thing of the past!

my husband was homeschooled and has the best memories about that.

trust me… that IS an option for later. but for now… i love that he gets to go play with other kids.

The boy sitting next to him in class looks like he should be in first grade.

When we were kids we got out of school I think at 2:50 (I think school went from 8:15-2:50). Anyways…we did our home work as soon we got home. We’d have a little snack and get to it.

This is why we started to homeschool…. When I did the math and realized they spent more awake time with someone else than with me…. It made my heart ache….

Anyway, when they had homework, the rule was “You do what you have to do before you do what you want to do….” So we did it first thing with a snack really fast so we could play ;) I hated it hanging over us while we played when we did it second.

Happy K year. I noticed it looked like the paper he is coloring says “Jesus is my friend”. Our kids were in private Christian school which made it easier…

And you are so right – You will be so much more intentional when he is with you because he has taken your heart and walked around part of the day with it and you missed it terribly! And they are just so darn cute to boot!

I had homework in kindergarten, but not from school. Mostly from mental math class. Lots. I did it right when I got home while I watched cartoons–until mom got back. And then I would go read for fun. I’m sure Chance will be able to do this too. It’s play and work at the same time!

Homework is definitely going to get worse every year though. And–I can’t believe I’m saying this–but it would probably be easier in the long-run to still have him do some worksheets in the summer. Getting back into the swing of things is the worst part anyway. AHHH! He’s so old and so cute!

My little boy is growing up way too fast. I am so proud of him I can hardly stand it.
