Grace Is For Sinners

The last two weeks have been heavy.

I have received more private emails regarding Affair Week than public comments within the posts. I expected to get SOME due to the sensitivity of this subject… but the amount has been mind-blowing.

There are SO many hurting people out there. So many of you feel you can’t ever talk about it to those around you. So many of you feel alone. So many of you feel like grace is for everyone BUT you. My heart breaks because I KNOW that feeling all too well. I remember feeling that. And if I’m totally honest… I still feel that sometimes.

But the truth is Love hung on a cross for me, then rose again, whether I feel that or not.

Grace is NOT for the unstained.
Grace is for me.
Grace is for SINNERS.

Serena wrote a book titled just that. She was kind enough to send it to me to review and in chapter 11, she wrote:

“… it is God’s for me to know Him more completely and He used my failure to teach me these things. It wouldn’t be possible for me to have the perspective that I have if I hadn’t failed. I would have no reason to question anything if everything was great.”

“When you deny pain, you deny the discovery of God in the pain.”

I believe this speaks to so many of us. The one connecting underlying thought I saw in most of the emails that came in was the self-loathing accompanied by hopelessness. It’s much easier to sit in our failures and stay failures than it is to wade out of the muck, walk away and clean ourselves up. We’re so deep in our own filth, the thought of even HOPING we can be redeemed is unfathomable.

We can’t see hope. It hurts to even THINK about seeing hope in the distance.

“Teach them to wait for the beauty while they’re in the ashes. Show them that their own sin only intensifies the awareness of their need for Jesus. Your sin speaks nothing new about your human condition.” ~ Serena Woods (Grace Is For Sinners, chapter 12)

But that’s exactly what this past week was about.

Every guest blogger had a different angle in how adultery affected them. These are just a few of the many I know… but these, my friends who wrote, can TEACH because they waited for beauty in the ashes… in the muck. They didn’t stay in the muck, because they saw better… in the distance. They got out of it. They cleaned themselves off and they walked towards the beauty. The beauty of redemption.

This beauty is for you too. It really is. I promise.

I hope this past couple of weeks has given you hope in whatever you situation may be. Even if it’s only given you a slight glimpse of hope FOR hope… that’s good. You are not alone. We have resources for you. A great one is marriage coaching through RefineOurMarriage Ministry. CLICK HERE for more information.

Now… I’ve written a little review on “Grace is For Sinners” that will post tomorrow, because TODAY… I have a personally addressed and signed copy from the lovely Serena to give away.

You. Want. This. Book.

I found you through my friend Alece at Grit and Glory. She pointed me over here last year when I was first healing from my own affair. Your posts these past. Two weeks have been a blessing, thank you for doing this.
I’m reading The Jungle something I never read in school and am enjoying it. Its the 28th book I have read this year.
I don’t have a favorite song but I love Hillsongs Your Grace is Enough.
The last thing I had a good laugh over was this past weekend with my husband. We were sitting on the couch imitating our three year old son and the funny things he does and says. It was just carefree fun with my husband while his parents had our Conrad for a few hours.

    • jenni August 26, 2010 at 8:48 am #

i’m so glad you could be a part of this week. there are so many families who’ve dealt/are dealing with this but never talk about it because they don’t want to be scrutinized. i’m hoping this helps “fallen” people not feel so alone.

we’re all fallen. some will just never show it.

B.) I’ve been in the process of moving and unpacking so I haven’t been reading. What I was reading before I started my move was “The Misunderstood God.”
C.) I have so many songs I love but one that really speaks to me is called “I run to You.”, written and performed by friends from my church. My favorite line in the song lyrics is :”How can you delight in me when I’m broken at your feet?” It’s a beautiful song.
D.) I don’t remember the last time I had a belly laugh. I do giggle a lot, usually watching my cats or one of my kids says something that cracks me up. Now that I’m thinking about this, I need a good belly laugh….

    Ok, hope I win!

swagbucks search? WHAT? seriously? hahahah! please explain that one!

      • Rebekah August 27, 2010 at 5:31 am #

Swagbucks.com is a search engine where you get points for searching the internet! You can collect points, then choose from gift cards or items. I currently have more than enough to get $20 in Starbucks cards. I can’t decide if that’s what I want, or if I want to hold out for bigger and better! I keep thinking I may hold out and use my points for a couple of Christmas gifts. ;-) Love it! I have several friends that use it, and one has already received more than $40 in amazon.com e-gift cards. If you decide to register, please use my name…I would get more points! It’s addictive…I never use any other search engines anymore!

a – um… twitter if I recall. It was a while back though – possibly from David Goodwin or Pete Wilson or somebody like that. Or maybe Tam.
b – just one? The Sword & the Flame (Lawbead) and The Christian Athiest (Groeschel)
c – Ooh – tough one. Currently Salvation Day by Vicky Beeching, Holy & Where You Go I Go – Kim Walker-Smith
d – my youngest daughter, um, farting. her laughter is contagious, and she thinks it is hilarious. Before that it was the hilarity at Catalyst One Day today. Oy.

      well… farts are funny. :)

Thanks for hosting these two weeks!

    a) Found your blog via Alece’s amazing blog about three weeks ago
    b) Between the Dreaming and the Coming True by Robert Benson and A Grace Disguised by Jerry Sittser (both great!)
    c) Use me Here by Everybody Duck and Glory is Here by Gungor
    d) My best friend surprised the heck out of me by showing up unexpectedly where I work at church all the way from the Czech Republic – having kept it a secret for a nearly 2 hour skype call less than 3 days earlier. I just cracked up at everything all day!

    • jenni August 26, 2010 at 11:03 pm #

i love me some alece. :)

welcome… and i hope you stick around.

  39. Bajanpoet August 26, 2010 at 11:14 pm #

    1. How I found the blog? From Tam’s bloglist. :)
    2. Reading? I surf more than I read these days :( But the last thing I read was a Clive Cussler novel – “The Silent Sea”
    3. Favourite Song? I have a lot of them… but it’s 2:07 in the morning here, so the only one that comes to mind is Angus Dei by Michael W Smith
    4. What made me laugh? As an IT professional and tech support in my company, I have to set people up with passwords and give them access to our software. I had an older gentleman come for access after recently being hired, and I knew I had a problem on my hands (that he knew NOTHING about computers) when he told me that he stopped going to a computer class because he heard about computer viruses and stopped going because he was afraid he would get sick! I seriously failed to keep a straight face…….

    :)

  40. ~VA~ August 27, 2010 at 5:24 am #

Wow, this post really resonated with me. I do often feel like I am not good enough for grace.

    a. I found your blog by linking over form Lynse Leanne

    b. I am currently reading the Bible, and a study book for the Pharm Tech test.

    c. My favorite song changes every few seconds, but one song I listen to is Have Your Way by Britt Nicole.

    d. The last thing I really laughed about was that at a leadership event last week when we were doing one of those rank the items necessary for survival things and someone yelled “choose the Bible, it burns easily”…probably wasn’t actually very funny, but no one had had much sleep so it seemed a lot funnier at the time.

    Hi Jenni,

I live on Bald Peak just above where you went to school at George Fox and your story is inspirational to say the least.

Anyways, I found out about your blog through Paul Byerly, the Marriage Bed.

I am currently reading “Sex is not the problem (lust is) by Joshua Harris, “Kiss Me Again” by Barbara Wilson and “Goals” by Brian Tracy.

My current favorite song is “Hookers and Robbers” by Charlie Hall (look him up on You Tube) — an excellent song about redemption and deliverance– please check it out.

I go to church in McMinnville at New Horizons Church. And the last thing that I belly-laughed about was a couple of weeks ago when a few brothers (during corporate prayer) touched me on the shoulder and we all broke out in unrestrained Holy Spirit-inspired laughter; it was the joy of the Lord!

Thank you and Brian for being there (maybe I’ll share my story with you all some time).

    Blessings!

    Ed Casavant

a: Twitter stalking…I love stumbling upon other women, unafraid of real-ness and their pasts who are now drowining in grace. They inspire me and motivate me. That said, I’m pretty sure it was through a string of tweets from other women I’ve happened upon on Twitter…maybe Markley, Catron, Juarez or Nobles…one of those smart and inspiring ladies.

b: I’m a book fiend. Currently reading “When Answers Aren’t Enough; Experiencing God as Good When Life Isn’t,” by Matt Rogers.

c: Sometimes I pretend I’m a music snob, liking music that no one has heard of until that artist is popular…and then I get tired of them. But the song that does it for me everytime is old, commercialized and mainstream…Kelly Clarkson…My Life Would Suck Without You…mostly because my life would suck without the amazing people who stick around and make my life fuller…they are gifts. And, on that note, probably “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Those, and, pretty much anything by the Killers. And Jonny Lang’s newer stuff. And Van Morrison. OK…I’ll stop now. I can easily go music crazy.

d: Crap. I love belly-laughing, but quickly realized (just now) that’s it’s been to long. However, everytime my good friend Danny tells the story from this spring about how he chased a mouse around his house with a frying pan trying to kill it, while screaming (because it was *charging* at him)…the mental image is hilarious. By the way, he did smash it with the pan…with pancake-flattening force.

    A. i found your blog through alece’s a few months ago

    B. currently reading Plan B by pete wilson…for the second time :)

    C. gosh. . .i am a lover of music. . .hmm, right now my favorite song is audrey assad’s “everything is Yours”. my favorite worship song of life is “blessed be Your name” or “Your name”. i am really loving any music right now that was written from a place of suffering and turns our hearts back to the beauty and grandness of the Lord and developing an intimate, personal relationship with Him.

    D. honestly. . .i can’t remember the last time i belly laughed. . .sad, i know. but the last thing i laughed at and truly meant it was when my mentor’s son called his 60+ preschool teacher “bootylicious”.
