Week One of “The Chart”

I posted our new CHART adventure last week.  I was hopeful… but here are the results:

week one chart

Yeah… check out the “poopy in toilet” row.  NO STICKERS!!!

Seriously, people… he LOVES the stickers and looks forward to sticking them on at the end of the day, but he still isn’t working for the poop.

He already lost his poopy sticker for today, even.  He cried and cried and cried for a diaper as I was putting him down for his quiet time.  Finally, I told him today was the LAST day he’d get a diaper during the day.  Diapers at night time only from tomorrow on.  He said, “ok”.

Then he dropped a deuce… in the diaper.  NAST!!!  As I was cleaning him up, I brought the soiled wipe up to his face to sniff.  He said, “Mommy… that’s yucky!”  And I said, “I know… next time you poopy in your pants, you have to clean it yourself because it’s not very nice to make Mommy do it when I know you can poopy in the toilet.”

I’m hoping the smell of poop next to his face left a lasting impression for him.

We’re gonna keep going on the chart for a few more weeks.  Mostly because I already bought the posterboard and stickers.

Any other ideas, people???

poop in your pants and make HIM clean it up.

Everytime you let him poop in a diaper…it’s one step back. Throw them away. Take them to a friend’s house that has a baby that can use them. Let him give them to the baby & explain to the mom that he no longer needs them cuz he can poop & pee in the toilet.

If you get desperate – make him carry around a puppy training pad. Make him sit on it no matter where you are, even in town.

He’ll get tired of carrying it. Tired of people asking about it. Should only take a couple of days.

    I’ve potty trained around 20 kids…I’m legit.

    You’ve now got 2 brilliant ideas…and I can’t top either of them… Have ‘fun’ :)

Joshua – you suck! I’m praying for your future children RIGHT NOW!

Mandy – I just told him we have no more diapers for day time. He still wets the bed at night though, so we need them for night time. I told him diapers come out only in the night time now… like the vampires.

    He’s cool with that.

David – seriously??? COME ON!!! You’re one of the most creative people I know.

I’m sure the smell of poop next to ANY kids face will leave a lasting impression…LOL

It will happen. No need to stress too much over it. (This coming from someone that had one child not fully potty trained until preschool was about to start). It doesn’t make you a bad parent. Kids develop differently. I found something important to them (Lego set, going to movies, etc) and gave each one a special gift for results.

    Liz – that’s what I’m hoping!!!

Jeff – Thanks! Keep praying for us. Seems small… but poop just adds up. Get it??? AHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Hayden had no problem with the poop-in-the-potty thing. Nate, however was another story. And he totally regressed after we moved to a new house. The move set us back about 8 months in poopy-potty world. It was brutal. He would disappear and then go in his underwear. It turned into a REAL battle – something I would advise that you avoid at all costs. He would clench up and not poop for a week at a time, which created an entire new set of problems. VERY TRAUMATIC for everyone involved. My heartrate is going up just thinking back to those days.

My advice? Keep him in underware and carry spares with you. Stick him on the toilet before you leave the house to go anywhere and ask him to try to go. But don’t make it a big deal. He won’t be pooping in his pants when he’s 5 – he’ll do it when he’s ready. But seriously, making it a big deal (no matter how NASTY it is to clean) only makes it all the more stressful.

Ultimately, one day Nate had to decide if he wanted to be able to go on a camping trip with Daddy; we were dead serious that if he didn’t go in the potty everyday the week before the trip, then he wouldn’t be able to go. Apparently, he wanted to camp, because he did it… BUT, that was after MONTHS of trying.

Tough one… two things that come to mind is that (1) every kid is different and (2) it takes time. It took a few months for us to get it going with Ryan, with employing a few different reward strategies and a lot of persistence. So keep at it, it will happen.

Jos & Tommy – thanks for the encouragement. That’s good to know your stories.

Chance can actually control his poop. He ASKS for a diaper so he can go. His Pediatrician said to keep doing that because it IS poop training even if it’s not in the toilet.

I’ve noticed if he doesn’t take a nap, he’ll end up going in the toilet because he doesn’t get a “quiet time” to poop in his diaper… but he ends up being really nasty if that goes on too long.

Jos – I’ll do the undies for sure. We just took away diapers completely (except for bedtimes).

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this….

we did this SAME THING with Dylan :: diapers only for bed :: and he would hold his poop ALL DAY LONG and poop when we put him in bed at night. It SUCKED!!!

So, be prepared!! They are smart little buggars!

  12. Brandy February 16, 2009 at 4:28 pm #

and I still have two left to PT. The second one is giving me major grief over this….and he’s 3!!!

  13. Brandy February 16, 2009 at 4:31 pm #

    oh! oh!
    SOmething I remembered….

When Dylan would ask for a diaper to poop in during the day, I would put him on it and make him sit ON the potty while he pooped in his diaper. For him, it was more about the weirdness of sitting to poop. So once he got comfortable pooping ON the toilet it was easier for him to do it without the diaper.

And you’re pediatrician is right, it is still poop training….just more like one step at a time. ;-)

  14. Jenni February 16, 2009 at 4:36 pm #

Brandy – Chance TOTALLY does that. He’ll hold it till he gets a diaper. I know this already. That’s why I’m asking for ideas.

the things you mothers go through …….

    - I would feed him lots of fiber like oatmeal carrots and apples or stuff that would make him go, so he will have to “duece” it up often and then you will have more oppurtunities to practice in a single day.
the sticker thing is a good idea.

I have been there, and can relate to any frustrations you have. BTW, I am not putting names in here since you never know if those will read it and be embarrassed. But, I can just tell you I had to have a party when I could finally get rid of the Diaper Genie (aka, the “poop snake”). I was changing diapers from 1991 through around 1999 (4 kids…)

You know.. pooping is really hard. Today I went in the toilet and it really hurt.. so I was thinking how much worse it would feel for a 3 year old. Poor baby.

    HAHAHAHAHHA. TMI!

  18. Renee February 16, 2009 at 6:44 pm #

oh wait.. he has not problem pooping.. just pooping in the toilet. Dang. I just gave out personal info for NOTHING! :O

  19. Renee February 16, 2009 at 6:45 pm #

    shut up.. ESL

  20. Melanie Sainz February 17, 2009 at 9:07 am #

Just a thought.. how does he do with going in the potty at school? or at a friends house? Maybe a couple of times he could do quiet time at a friends house who wears underwear to quiet time and is already poopy potty trained in the toilet. If he could see someone else his age doing it, it might stop any fear or whatever is going on in his little head associated with it that causes him to only want to go in his diaper. Who knows.. just thought I would throw that out there.

  21. Jenni Clayville February 17, 2009 at 7:03 pm #

He’s POTTY TRAINED & POOPY TRAINED… he just would rather go in his diaper. I want him to put the brown stuff IN the brown stuff flusher!

    Renee – you’re a freak!
