Today was the first day in our new series about MONEY MANAGEMENT.  Practical, right???

It was Mark & myself on guitars today and Liz on keys.  It’s always fun to have three part harmony.

Here was our Sunday Setlist:

  1. Not To Us – Chris Tomlin
  2. King of Glory – Chris Tomlin
  3. Mighty To Save – Reuben Morgan
  4. Heart of Worship – Matt Redman
  5. Holiness – Scott Underwood
  6. Desert Song – Brooke Fraser
  7. You Alone – David Crowder

It was good to call everyone back to the “Heart of Worship” after Matt talked about what we should really do with our finances in this economy.  Well… I think I was mostly calling myself back to the heart of worship.

Church! at Bethan

I’m blown away week after week over what kind of man our Pastor is.  I know if he had extra money, he would put it all back into the church or into our community.

It’s no secret, that if I had more freedom in my finances, it would go to one of two things:

  1. Paying off debt
  2. Fun material items

I don’t want to be THAT kind of person.  I want the least of these to benefit from my mere existence.  I WANT to find myself in THAT place, where my heart’s desire is to make it ALL about Jesus.

Man… I have a LONG ways to go.

So, tell me…

if you had an extra $10,000 a month, what would you do with the money???

Wow, you get to play tons of music! What a great time of worship with this song list.

Not sure what I’d do w/ and extra $10k

  3. David (dg4G) says:

Hmm – 10K extra per month. We’d certainly put some of it into debt reduction (mortgage in big city = aagghhh!), but also…
    (1) sponsor an extra 20 Compassion children. We have 2 at the moment…and one with World Vision who is soon to ‘graduate’…which means we’ll move to 3 with Compassion.
    (2) our church supports an orphanage in Thailand; we’d give them extra money regularly, but also go and visit and help practically as well
    (3) we live in an affluent area, where poverty is very well hidden but we know exists. I’d put resources into seeking it out and making a real difference. Ever seen “The Secret Millionaire”? I’d love to be that person on a daily basis – being Light and Life.

  4. Helen says:

    Oh that’s easy:
    1,000- Back to God
3,000- Debt (but only for 3 months cuz then I’ll be done). After that, Love146 (anti-human trafficking).
    1,000- Students Helping Honduras
1,000- DaySpring Children’s Home (Dalit Orphanage in India)
1,000- Watoto Gulu (Rehabilitate Ugandan child soldiers)
    2,000- Savings
    1,000- Family…and shoes.

  5. I would be giving to the Police Activities League of Portland – they help a lot of kids stay off the streets and provide police a positive interaction with youth that are otherwise likely to never have a positive image of them.
I would also give to WhiteShield and The West which are programs that help some pf Portlands most needy.

I would definitely give more of it away & I’d go to more concerts.

  8. Jennifer H says:

The “nice” answer is to give at least half back to the church… and I’d strive for that, but the “honest” answer would most likely be that for 6 months we would pay down debt… pay off my car and get my hubby a new one before his completely dies.
Of course, there would be the $1,000 off the top – that is a given – and I’d love to bless the church with an extra $1,000 just because ;)
and honestly, there would be some shoe shopping in there. Yep. Hey, there are THREE girls in this house! A girl’s gotta have shoes, right?

So, when does this extra $10K start coming in? lol

  9. Janaki says:

Just curious – how long do you spend on music? Do you do the set after the message?

    LOVE three part harmonies!

  10. We get 3 songs at the top (with welcome mixed in there somewhere), and 4 songs in the response to the message.

Matt is pretty good at keeping his message to 30-35 minutes :)

  12. Jenna says:

Donate 10%, buy a car, move out, take a couple more trips, and buy more business clothes (home girl is really struggling in that area right now…)

  13. Steff says:

I think you are the first person I’ve seen doing “Desert Song” . How are people responding to it?

  14. Jenni says:

    Jenna – YES!!!

Steff – They’re responding pretty well to “Desert Song”. I end up doing a lot of Hillsong stuff at my church because I love it so much.

Funny you should post this. We just made a goal for 2009 to commit to $1k/month giveaway to 10 different ministries/missionaries which is exactly $10,000/mo.
We’ve asked those we give to now to pray over our businesses so that we can give more liberally. We believe that God is doing it already! He always comes through.
How cool to press through in faith to give generously when all around us our culture is frozen by fear and immobilized.
